Questions from the clubhouse

Asked and answered.

Which edition should I buy?

If you just want to keep score, get the Score Book in green or blue. They have the same pages inside. If you want to get better, get the Score Book & Field Notes. Every scorecard has a notes page on its back for target types, hold points and lessons.

How many targets can I shoot at a station?

Each station has room for 6 or 8 targets. Shooting six? Scratch off boxes 7 and 8 before you start.

Can I shoot a 100-target round?

Yes. With 6 or 8 targets a station, 100 targets needs 13 to 15 stations. For example, 8 stations of 8 and 6 stations of 6. Use the round planner above to work out any round.

What is a true pair versus a report pair?

A true pair (also known as a simo) launches both targets at the same time. A report pair launches the second target at the sound of your first shot. Circle T or R on each station.

How big is it?

4 by 6 inches. It fits a vest pocket, a shell bag or a glove box. Keep a pencil tucked inside.

About the author

Some men shoot clays. Dan walks on like he owns the leaderboard.

Dan DeCristoforo closed his first deal at nine years old, and he has been closing ever since: five companies and counting, memberships at private clubs in New York and Providence and a passport that never stays in the drawer for long.

He is a globetrotting entrepreneur and a food connoisseur with a critic’s palate, and he wrote the book on meatballs, literally: You Have No Balls. He is also the man who invented The Cigar Bar, because a great cigar deserves a great finish.

His pre-round ritual never changes: a good cigar lit at the clubhouse, a slow walk to Station 1 and not one word until the first pair is dust. The smoke drifts downrange. The targets do not.

House rules of the course.

  1. Write it down.Memory is generous. The scorecard is not.
  2. Plan the round first.Pick 50 or 100, count the stations, then decide 6 or 8 at each one.
  3. The second bird counts too.A true pair is two targets, not one and an excuse.
  4. Station seven is always the hard one.Nobody knows why. Write down what you did there.
  5. No pencil, no score.Keep one in the book. Keep the book in your vest.
  6. Cigar after the round.Or during. We are not your mother.
